Studying the NeXT Cube at the Media Archaeology Lab and attempting to repair the damaged “Human Interaction Management: A Proposal” cloud doc by reverse engineering the timeline and reestablishing a stable network connection. The restoration status is still pending and “unsure.” ((((❓))))

Multisensory Interfaces

Observing old-er interfaces with new-er perspectives, IIRL's research on shapeshifters examine the ideas around seamless scars and flesh as interface.

A speculative past and future can be ontologically bridged through the interconnecting languages that exist and speak to and from each other. The transformative quality of language and the trajectory of western “technological mode of being in the world (Larry McCaffrey quoted in Terminal Identity by Scott Bukatman, 1993)” breathes and lives through the systems of categorization deeply embedded within the hardware we interact with.

Modeled after Nam June Paik’s instructional performance liner notes, H A R D W A R E ! absurdly accentuates each layered components of a computer at work illustrating how electricity transmits from a power cord and reaches its interfacing user. The synergistic harmony required between the hardware elements and the synaptic responses from the user to activate and perceive a modern machine is a silent yet powerfully charged symphony of orchestrated motions.

Human Interaction Management: A Proposal

An amorphous document that connects IIRL's various R&D experimentations and proposes alternative human interaction systems. SEICA's all-in-one cloud printer-scanner-shredder flopped miserably and so the original document has been corrupted. But thankfully, the team was able to take collective mental notes.

This proposal concerns the management of general human interaction with prototypes and experiments at SEICA Human Interaction Labs. It discusses the problems of loss of physical interaction in relation to complex evolving consumer electronic interface systems and derives a solution based on a hyper-human system.

IIRL Research Overview

Laura Onmeta, SEICA Head of Research and Intermediary Interface Research Lab Lead
The Intermediary Interface Research Lab (IIRL) focuses on aggregating virtual research results from the Living Thing Research Lab (LTRL), Human Condition Research Lab (HCRL), and Speculative Human Research Lab (SHRL) to rethink the conventional human-tech interaction and proposes alternative interfaces to develop a series of Companion Artefact robot prototypes. The core research unfolds from a Human Interaction Management: A Proposal document modeled after Tim Berner-Lees’ ground-breaking Information Management: A Proposal proposed in 1989.

From buttons to touchscreens to speech synthesizers, as much as commercially marketed products are developed to increase user experience through smooth electronic interfaces that minimize physical interaction, there is still a recognizable trend and pattern circulating in digital culture which is a need and desire for tactility and physical intimacy (HCRL). The lab takes these human tendencies into consideration and proposes thought-provoking human-(tech)-human interaction designs. On-going research from the IIRL is implemented for creating digital and material prototypes by the SEICA Prototype Lab.
